Full Package for Lyres – Plectrum, Telamon, Bridges and Gut Strings for Ancient Replica Instruments
This listing is for a full set of everything a player of an ancient Greek or Roman lyre might need, as it includes two wooden plectrums, three wooden different wooden bridges, an extra set of 9 gut strings and a hand-knitted hand-strap (telamon).
Needless to say that every single item of this full package is authentically handmade, as it was during the antiquity!
Item 1: Two Wooden Plectrums
Two of our authentic ancient Greek picks for stringed instruments, which during the antiquity were called «plectrums» (i.e. a plectrum is a small flat tool used to pluck or strum a stringed instrument). They are made using wood, as Ancient Greeks were doing among the others (there were both wooden and animal bones during the antiquity).
Ancient Greeks were using plectrums for playing the lyre, but today they can be used for any stringed instrument as a different kind of pick and add different playing styles to your technique.
In the package, you will get two authentic plectrums, both made of wood. What's more, they come with a leather string to attach them to your ancient lyre or another stringed musical instrument.
The dimensions of every plectrum vary, as they depend on the raw material available at any given time. Approximately, their length is 8-12 cm, their width 2-4 cm and their thickness 0.5 cm.
Michael Levy, one of the most well-known ancient lyre players around the world, recently got his ancient plectrum by Luthieros and commented (among the others) in public:
«The extra mass of the plectrum, (compared with my not-so authentic guitar pick!) enables much better sounding 'string stopping' techniques at the bridge (using the plectrum as a fret at the top of the string to raise its pitch by either a semitone or microtone).
The extra mass of the bone plectrum enables it to be used as a fret at the top of the strings to create accidentals and microtones, or for really cool effects like sliding the plectrum along the length of a vibrating string to create portamento! Surprisingly, effects like a Simsimiyya style tremolo work even better with this plectrum than on a modern guitar pick, which I used on my other lyres. Block and strum technique with this plectrum provides extra volume than a guitar pick, but it is a little more difficult to rapidly change the direction of the strumming pattern with the lack of flexibility in the authentic bone plectrum.
The best thing about these authentic bone plectrums in the leather cord, attaching the plectrum to the lyre at all times – what a clever idea of the ancients…it is literally impossible to ever lose the plectrum!»
Item 2: Three Wooden Bridges
A set of three wooden bridges of different heights and weights, that can a player easily change them in order his beautiful lyre to produce melodies with different sound qualities! Wood is a material that was used by Ancient Greeks and other civilizations during the antiquity of constructed bridges for stringed instruments.
Check the sketch image of this listing (the last image), in order to understand the position and the use of a bridge on an ancient lyre!
The set includes three wooden bridges:
(1) Made of ebony or wenge, 3 cm tall.
(2) Made of rosewood, 2 cm tall.
(3) Made of ebony, 1 cm tall.
Item 3: Set of 9 gut strings
A set of 9 gut strings for our authentic ancient Greek lyres or any other stringed instrument. They are made using animal gut, a material that was used by Ancient Greeks and other civilizations during the antiquity.
Due to their natural material, gut strings are more sensitive than other synthetic ones. On the other hand, according to many musicians, gut strings can produce premium sound. Our set of gut strings are designed and manufactured to be used mainly by low to mid tension stringed instruments, like most of the lyre-like instruments of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.
The length of the gut strings is 65 cm and they come in three different thicknesses: thickness 0 (the thickest one), thickness 1 and thickness 2 (the thinner one).
So, a set of 9 strings has three strings of thickness 0, three strings of thickness 1 and three strings of thickness 2.
Item 4: Hand-knitted Hand-strap (telamon)
A hand-strap (τελαμών, in greek) made of synthetic thread and hand-knitted. A τελαμών (hand-strap) was used by the player to «secure» the lyre on his upper body and be able to hit the strings with both his hand, for advanced lyre playing. Each Luthieros hand-strap (telamon) has 30 cm length and 2,8 cm width.
This hand-strap is ideal to be used on one our ancient replica lyres, but it can be purchased by players that own an ancient replica string instrument by other luthiers too!
Needless to say that no animal was harmed during the manufacturing process of our hand-straps. Due to their natural material, Luthieros gut strings are limited and can become unavailable at any time.

"My ancient Kithara, handcrafted by Luthieros Music Instruments, is for me a very interesting challenge. As an instrument is both old and new. It carries a history of many centuries and at the same time_ it is a very modern challenge that requires a creative approach to musical archetypes. After many experiments […] I discover that this instrument has but many extensions and features that are not noticeable at first glance. The construction is both sturdy and thin, and made of quality woods, which are eclectic, stylish and durable." - Ross Daly, a professional world musician of Irish descent.
"Electric guitars are very often provided with vibrato, tremolo or whammy bars. That concept was in fact invented by the ancient Greeks twenty four hundred years ago. Kithara was a musical instrument very popular during the Golden Age of Ancient Greece. This is a reproduction that was made by the Greek master luthier Anastasios Koumartizis of Luthiers Music Instruments." - Peter Pringle, a professional Canadian musician, and well-known ancient instruments player. "It’s handcrafted with such care and the materials are fine and well chosen. It arrived to us safely all the way from Greece and we were able to track it all the way so we always knew what was happening." - Rachel Loeb, Los Angeles, U.S.A. (verified review through Etsy.com).
"Absolutely fantastic! A truly wonderfully crafted instrument. I can’t put it down. It feels wonderful to play and is transporting me back in time." - Sarah Tilsley, West Sussex, U.K. (verified review through Etsy.com).
"Can't be happier with my lyre! Learning how to play this amazing piece of art! The lyre has amazing finishes and you can feel it's made with love and skilfull hands." - Jaume Gual Bennàssar, Balearic Islands, Spain (verified review through Etsy.com).
"Amazing company! I was very skeptical about ordering an instrument online but it was packaged very safely and arrived in such a timely manner! Luthieros also has some of the best communication skills I've ever encountered with a company, I had many questions that were all answered with great detail shortly after I asked them." - Batherus Batherus, New York, U.S.A.
