Lyre of Hermes
— Homeric Hymn to Hermes, line 490
This is the ancient chelys lyre, inspired by Hermes, her mythical inventor. According to Greek mythology, the young god crafted the first lyre from a tortoise shell, animal skin, and strings. Apollo was so enchanted by her sound that he offered Hermes his stolen cattle in exchange for the instrument.
Handcrafted in ancient Europos, Northern Greece, by the LUTHIEROS family of musicians and luthiers, the Lyre of Hermes brings this myth into the present. Her design emerged from years of studying archaeological evidence and ancient depictions, followed by extensive prototyping and testing with accomplished musicians.
Crafted from natural materials known in antiquity, she features carefully selected tonewoods, a soundbox inspired by an actual tortoise shell, ebony and mulberry tuning pegs, an animal-skin tailpiece, and a wooden plectrum. Modern tools such as 3D modeling were also used during the instrument’s university-based development to achieve the ideal balance between historical accuracy and modern playability.
The traditional 7-string model is an ideal starting point for beginners, with intuitive tuning and remarkable expressive potential. The enhanced 9-string version offers an expanded chromatic range and an upgraded soundbox producing fuller projection, greater tonal depth, longer sustain, and a wider dynamic range.
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced musician, the Lyre of Hermes invites you to encounter the sounds of ancient Greece not as a silent museum artifact, but as a living instrument ready to be played again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone learn to play the lyre?
Yes! The Lyre of Hermes was specifically designed with beginners in mind. No previous musical experience is required—just curiosity and a desire to explore the enchanting sound of the ancient lyre.
Do you ship worldwide?
Yes, we ship our instruments to lyre enthusiasts around the world. Every shipment is 100% insured, and we guarantee the safe delivery of your instrument wherever you are. No matter where you live, you can begin your musical journey with a handcrafted LUTHIEROS lyre.
Does the lyre arrive tuned?
Every lyre is carefully tuned and kept under full string tension for several days, allowing us to observe how she responds and ensure that everything remains stable.
One day before shipping, the strings are loosened to relieve excess tension and protect the instrument from the temperature and humidity fluctuations that can occur during air travel. Therefore, your lyre will arrive untuned—but this does not mean that she has not been thoroughly tuned and tested beforehand.
On the contrary, this process removes much of the strings’ initial elasticity, making the lyre easier to tune once she reaches you. Detailed video instructions are included to guide you through the tuning process and help you begin playing with ease.
Can children learn to play it?
Absolutely! The lyre’s intuitive design makes it approachable for both children and adults. It is a wonderful instrument for introducing younger musicians to melody, rhythm, creativity, and the musical world of antiquity.
