Who we are

In unity we trust.

Passion

«We are a niche music brand, with a declared love for ancient-inspired musical instruments, and we yearn to keep it this way.»

> On the right column, from top to bottom: Anastasios (Master Luthier), Jordan (Senior Luthier), Nikolaos (R&D), and Theodore Koumartzis (Communication Manager).

Koumartzis familia is a musician’s family, nurtured to respect and promote the musical heritage of Greece (both ancient and modern). With many professionals and amateur musicians among their members, we have decided to focus on producing top-quality musical instruments from our tradition and reintroduce them to the global market.

With R&D projects such as «The Lyre 2.0 Project», we have managed to produce and make available top-quality stringed instruments and drums, which can be used by both wanna-be and professional musicians. We use almost exclusively natural materials such as wood (maple etc.), natural glues, animal bones, and leather to handcraft our instruments.

Our workshop has been set up near Ancient Europos (Greece), where our ancestors used to live and evolve in a full cultural environment. It is not an exaggeration when we say that the first humans ever called Europeans, were the ancient citizens of Europos (based on archaeological evidence found in the area). This unique heritage is present along our whole musical instrument product line.

The «heart» of LUTHIEROS Musical Instruments is the father of the family, Anastasios, an amateur musician (for more than 40 years), a best-selling author of DIY (do-it-yourself) luthier guides in Greek and a luthier for almost two decades now. Along with his three sons and his wife, Eleni, have managed to create a product line of top quality musical instruments such as Ancient Greek Lyres, complicated ancient musical instruments (Kithara, Lyre of Ur etc.), Ancient Egyptian Drums (Bendir) etc.

Even if our musical instruments travel literally around the globe (LUTHIEROS is a niche brand with a great reputation worldwide), our family-based company’s vision is to provide employment to our small community, especially during the harsh years of Greek financial recession.

Without compromising quality, the time needed or aesthetics, we keep our business profits as low as possible (only for being able to proceed with the necessary investments in research and development) in order to achieve a fair price for our premium musical instruments.

This is our heartfelt pledge to the global music community all these years, and this is why dozens of musicians around the world give us each year the opportunity to manufacture more premium musical instruments.

We strongly believe that music is the intermediate for people to communicate, and so we focus on providing the right “tools” to make that happen (i.e. musical instruments that can be seen as unique artifacts).

How it all started

Did you know that all began as an R&D project, back in 2014?

^ The “Lyre 2.0 Project” was Nikolaos Koumartzis’ MSc thesis at International Hellenic University (Greece). From the very start, it received a lot of attention and endorsements in both academic and entrepreneurship conferences.
